Dear Elena, you're right to question the term "Palestine." That was the name conjured by the Roman empire when the cry of 'perish Judea' went up after we had revolted against their rule yet again. Sadly, the rest of the world took it up and the name lasted for too long. Erez Israel has never been entirely empty of our presence for a good 3,000 years, even with the Rome instigated exile. The lineages of the present day Arab inhabitants of our land have only lived there for a few hundred years. Why should any of our people be called settlers in our own land? Which is not to say that anyone else shouldn't live there, but in peace with their Jewish neighbours. I wish they understood history, that our story did not begin in the 1940's CE.

Google AI: Herodotus mentions "Palestine" in his 5th-century BCE work, The Histories, describing it as a "district of Syria, called Palaistinê" located between Phoenicia and Egypt. He applied the term to both the coastal areas and some inland regions, including the Judean mountains and the Jordan Rift Valley. The first clear use of "Palestine" referring to this wider area is generally attributed to Herodotus. He referred to the inhabitants as the "Syrians of Palestine". He noted that they practiced circumcision but did not mention Jews or Israelites.

Roman writers as well as Roman Judean writers Philo of Alexandria and Josephus, used the word, these examples covering every century from the 4th BCE to the 1st CE. There is, however, no evidence of the name on any Hellenistic coin or inscription: There is no indication that the term was used in an official context in the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods, it does not occur in the New Testament, and Philo and Josephus preferred "Judaea".

According to the history, there is no connection between ancient Palestine and its inhabitants (Jews), and the "Palestine" of today and its inhabitants (Arabs). The only valid claim for the belonging of the Land of Israel to the People of Israel is the Torah! Any other justification will only complicate the matter. It must be stated clearly and decisively that the Jews are settlers (Mitnahalim) the Children of Israel returning to the land of their forefathers to take possession of their ancestral inheritance, the Land of Israel, which they received from God. The situation of the People of Israel and its connection to the Land of Israel is unique in world history: a chosen people receiving a chosen land from God! This connection is the very core of Judaism, and has been so for all generations, from the Exodus from Egypt until this very day!
