הַכְּרֻבִים. {פ}
................................

Israel, a colonialist state?
Israel,
a colonialist state?
The
paper that I intend to respond is https://www.salon.com/2006/12/06/orientalism/.
It
contains the following sentence:
"It
is not acceptable to sit in Beirut or Cairo meeting halls and denounce American
imperialism (or Zionist colonialism for that matter) without a whit of
understanding that these are complex societies not always truly represented by
their governments' stupid or cruel policies."
According
to this sentence, Israel state is a “Zionist colonialism” state. I am strongly
against this affirmation.
I
would try to understand what “colonialism” is. After that, I would try to
compare the notion of “colonialism” versus the principles of the state of
Israel, news, of our times, and especially the very old principles of the
Jewish faith, more than three thousand years old. Furthermore, I would try to
explain the grounds of my opinion.
1.
What is “Colonialism”?
I
would take the definition of “Colonialism” as it is appearing in Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism:
a.
Colonialism is a
practice or policy of control by one people or power over other people or areas,
often by establishing colonies and generally with the
aim of economic dominance. In the process of colonisation, colonisers may impose their
religion, language, economics, and other cultural practices. The foreign
administrators rule the territory in pursuit of their interests, seeking to
benefit from the colonised region's people and resources. It is associated
with but distinct from imperialism.
b. Collins English
Dictionary defines colonialism as "the practice
by which a powerful country directly controls less powerful countries and uses
their resources to increase its own power and wealth". Webster's Encyclopedic
Dictionary defines colonialism as "the system or policy of a nation
seeking to extend or retain its authority over other people or
territories".
c.
The Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy uses the term "to
describe the process of European settlement and political control over the rest
of the world, including the Americas, Australia, and parts of Africa and
Asia".
d.
In his preface to Jürgen
Osterhammel's Colonialism: A Theoretical Overview,
Roger Tignor says "For Osterhammel, the essence of colonialism is the
existence of colonies, which are by definition governed differently from other
territories such as protectorates or informal spheres of influence."
e.
In the book, Osterhammel
asks, "How can 'colonialism' be defined independently from
'colony?'" He settles on a three-sentence definition:
Colonialism is a relationship
between an indigenous (or forcibly imported) majority and a minority of foreign
invaders. The fundamental decisions affecting the lives of the colonised people
are made and implemented by the colonial rulers in pursuit of interests that
are often defined in a distant metropolis. Rejecting cultural compromises with
the colonised population, the colonisers are convinced of their own superiority
and their ordained mandate to rule.
f.
The Times once quipped
that there were three types of colonial empire: "The English, which
consists in making colonies with colonists; the German, which collects
colonists without colonies; the French, which sets up colonies without
colonists." Modern studies of colonialism have often distinguished
between various overlapping categories of colonialism, broadly classified into
four types: settler
colonialism, exploitation
colonialism, surrogate
colonialism, and internal
colonialism. Some historians have identified other forms
of colonialism, including national and trade forms.
Settler
colonialism involves large-scale immigration by settlers to
colonies, often motivated by religious, political, or economic reasons. This
form of colonialism aims largely to supplant prior existing populations with a
settler one, and involves large number of settlers emigrating to colonies for
the purpose of settling down and establishing settlements. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, United States, Uruguay,
(and to a more controversial extent Israel) are
examples of nations created or expanded in their contemporary form by settler
colonization.
2.
Is Israel a “colonialist”
state?
I
would try to compare the State of Israel versus each of the sentences of point
1. The comparison, and even more the conclusion is not simple at all. The
support could be found even in the multitude of ‘definitions’, and faces of the
term “Colonialism”.
a.
The aim of Israel is not an
economic aim at all, but the re-patriation of the Jewish people to its old,
ancestral ‘patria’ that is Eretz Israel, The Land of Israel. Israel does not
impose its religion on the peoples that live in Eretz Israel. Contrary is the
true: the Jewish faith does not encourage it at all, it is against
‘missionary’s work’. None the language – to say this would be like saying the
Great Britain imposes the use of English through the world. The same with economic, or cultural practices.
Israel does not profit from the ‘benefit from the colonised region's people and
resources’. The contrary is true: all the people that live in Israel, and Eretz
Israel, benefit from the Israel economy. To sustain this, let’s see the economic
situation of peoples living in Yehuda and Shomron versus that of peoples living
in the neighbor countries, as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, Yemen, and even
more.
b.
See the last sentences of a.
c.
Israel is not “European
settlement and political control”. The population of Israel is formed of Jews
that live from the very old times in Eretz Israel, even when Eretz Israel was
under the Arab, and Ottoman domination. Other Israeli Jews repatriated from
Europe, but also, and maybe the majority, from Arab countries, Africa (see the
Jews of Ethiopian origin), East, and far East (see the Jews of Indian origin, Persian
origin, and even Chinese origin).
d.
Israel is governed by the
people that live in Israel. Let’s see the present days demonstrations in Israel
on the base of government questions.
e.
The Jews are not ‘foreign invaders’.
The Jews are re-patriating to the old ‘patria’ of Eretz Israel. Once again,
Israel is governed by the people that live in Israel. Let’s see the present
days demonstrations in Israel on the base of government questions. Regarding
the cultural question, many of Israeli Jews are of Arabic countries origin. They
bring with the Arab culture that is largely accepted in Israel. Furthermore, let’s
remember “Golden age of Jewish culture in Spain” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_age_of_Jewish_culture_in_Spain:
“The golden age of
Jewish culture in Spain, which coincided with the Middle Ages in Europe, was a period of Muslim rule during
which, intermittently, Jews were generally accepted in society and Jewish
religious, cultural, and economic life flourished.”
Furthermore, it is not a
question of “own superiority and their ordained mandate to rule.” Simply, The
Jewish people is repatriating to their old land Eretz Israel.
f.
“Settler
colonialism”, according to Wikipedia, consists of also “Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, United States, Uruguay,
(and to a more controversial extent Israel) are
examples of nations created or expanded in their contemporary form by settler
colonization.” Israel is the more controversial example. One simple question: Why
only Israel is seen as a ‘colonialist country’, and only against Israel there
are very adverse actions in the world, but not about “Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, United States, Uruguay”?
The answer cold be that other interests are also involved! Interest that are
not at all connected to the “colonialism” nature of Israel.
As a
result, Israel is not at all a “colonialist” state. This opinion is based on a
comparison between characteristics of “colonialism” versus the characteristics
of the Jewish faith, Jewish history, and Jewish state Israel.
3.
The grounds of Israel
As I
already said, the Jews from all the world repatriate to Israel. The Israel
people (it is the old name of the Jewish people) entered and established in Eretz
Israel before about 3,500 years, after their Exodus from slavery in the antic
Egypt. Let’s remember the song of Louis Armstrong “Let’s my people go” based on
a verset of the Thora, what Moshe Rabeinu (our Teacher) asked the Egypt’s Pharaoh
and asking the same thing for the Jews of the Soviet Union in the years of
seventies.
The
connection between the Jewish people and between the Eretz Israel is
established by Thora of the Jewish people, given to them by the God. It could
ask the question: Could be seen the Thora as a valuable document of the
connection between the Eretz Israel, and between the Jewish people? The answer
would depend on the faith of the answering people: if he, she believes or not
believes in the God. This could bring another question: could the existence of
the God be validated, or the inexistence of the God could be validated by our
present means? The answer is not, not
the existence, and not the inexistence. It depends on our trust in the
testimony of 600,000 slaves and their families that ware freed from the Egypt’s
slavery and were present at Mount Sinai.
Israel
is not a colonialist state, and note an imperialist state. Israel does not want
to conquer its neighbor countries. The inverse is the true: the armies of
Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq attacked Israel in 1948, 1967, 1973. In
our days, the very existence of Israel is under peril of war from Gaza,
Lebanon, and Iran.
Therefore,
Israel is not a ‘colonialist state’ in a clear and strong way.
70. Discussing
Slavery

Discussing
Slavery
The
paper [https://yaqeeninstitute.org/read/paper/slavery-and-islam-what-is-slavery ] discusses
the slavery institution during the medieval Islam. It is known that the Islam
was influenced, even largely, by the Jewish faith, by the Thora, by Jewish philosopher.
It seems to me, according to this paper, that the slavery institution in Islam
was also influenced by the Jewish or Israel prescripts given to the Israel
people on the slavery institution by the Thora.
Therefore,
I would describe here some of the laws about slavery, found in Thora.
1.
Slavery
according to the Thora
A
good approach to this subject, “Slavery according to the Thora” could be found
in [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_views_on_slavery ] (the
following section here is the introduction to the Wikipedia post):
“Jewish
views on slavery are varied both religiously and historically. Judaism's ancient and medieval
religious texts contain numerous laws governing the ownership and treatment
of slaves. Texts that contain such
regulations include the Hebrew Bible,
the Talmud, the 12th-century Mishneh Torah by
rabbi Maimonides, and the 16th-century Shulchan Aruch by rabbi Yosef Karo…. The Hebrew Bible contained
two sets of laws, one for Canaanite slaves, and a more
lenient set of laws for Hebrew slaves. From the time of the Pentateuch, the
laws designated for Canaanites were applied to all non-Hebrew slaves. The
Talmud's slavery laws, which were established in the second through the fifth
centuries CE, contain a single set of rules for all slaves, although there
are a few exceptions where Hebrew slaves are treated differently from
non-Hebrew slaves. The laws include punishment for slave owners that mistreat
their slaves.
Broadly,
the Biblical and Talmudic laws tended to consider slavery a form of contract
between persons, theoretically reducible to voluntary slavery, unlike chattel
slavery, where the enslaved person is legally rendered the personal property
(chattel) of the slave owner. Hebrew slavery was prohibited during the Rabbinic
era for as long as the Temple in Jerusalem is
not reconstructed (i.e., the last two millennia). Although not prohibited,
Jewish ownership of non-Jewish slaves was constrained by Rabbinic authorities
since non-Jewish slaves were to be offered conversion to Judaism during their
first 12-months term as slaves. If accepted, the slaves were to become Jews,
hence redeemed immediately. If rejected, the slaves were to be sold to
non-Jewish owners. Accordingly, the Jewish law produced a constant stream of
Jewish converts with previous slave experience. Additionally, Jews were
required to redeem Jewish slaves from non-Jewish owners, making them a
privileged enslavement item, albeit temporary. The combination has made Jews
less likely to participate in enslavement and slave trade.”
2.
Several
percepts of the Thora about slavery institution
Many
percepts about the slavery institution could be found in the Thora, Exodus,
Mishpatim [Justice Laws] 21
[https://mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0221.htm]:
1 Now
these are the ordinances which thou shalt set before them. (You is Moshe
Rabeinu, Them is the Israel people)
2 If
thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve; and in the seventh he
shall go out free for nothing.
3 If
he come in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he be married, then his
wife shall go out with him.
4 If
his master give him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and
her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
5 But
if the servant shall plainly say: I love my master, my wife, and my children; I
will not go out free;
6 Then
his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto
the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he
shall serve him for ever. {S}
7 And
if a man sell his daughter to be a maid-servant, she shall not go out as the
men-servants do.
8 If
she please not her master, who hath espoused her to himself, then shall he let
her be redeemed; to sell her unto a foreign people he shall have no power,
seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.
9 And
if he espouse her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of
daughters.
10 If
he take him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her conjugal rights, shall
he not diminish.
11 And
if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out for nothing, without
money. {S}
There are more laws connected to the slavery institution. It seems to me that the slavery institution in Islam was largely influenced by the Jewish Laws, by the Thora. Furthermore, it seems to me important to remember that the Thora was given to the Israel people by the God about 4,000 years ago!
